Mountain Lion Sighting - Newhall

Wednesday - April 30, 2008 - 5:00 p.m. - Newhall:

Deputies responded to a call near the 21300 block of Oakriver Lane late this afternoon where two mountain lions were spotted sitting on a hillside.  Deputies report that there were some bones, apparently belonging to small domestic animals, and bike tracks in the area, but the mountain lions did not pose any immediate danger to residents.

The California Department of Fish and Game responded and managed to chase one of the cats, a large male, further into the rural area of the hillside just before dark.  Deputies conducted door knocks in the area to warn residents of the sighting.

The California Department of Fish and Game offers the following safety tips in their "Keep Me Wild" brochure pertaining to mountain lions:

Staying Safe in Mountain Lion Country

Mountain lions are quiet, solitary and elusive, and typically avoid people.

Mountain lion attacks on humans are extremely rare. However, conflicts are increasing as California’s human population expands into mountain lion habitat.

  • Do not hike, bike, or jog alone.
  • Avoid hiking or jogging when mountain lions are most active—dawn, dusk, and at night.
  • Keep a close watch on small children.
  • Do not approach a mountain lion.
  • If you encounter a mountain lion, do not run; instead, face the animal, make noise and try to look bigger by waving your arms; throw rocks or other objects. Pick up small children.
  • If attacked, fight back.
  • If a mountain lion attacks a person,
    immediately call 911.

Residents should call the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station at (661) 255-1121 if a mountain lion is spotted nearing a populated area in the Santa Clarita Valley.  If it is poses immediate danger to any person you should promptly call 9-1-1 and be prepared to provide detailed information to the dispatcher pertaining to the location of the animal.

Additional information on living in mountain lion country and the California Department of Fish and Game's complete brochure and safety tips can be found at the following link: "Keep Me Wild" mountain lion information.

City's VIDA Deputy Honored as Best in the County

VIDA: Our Youth - Our Future - Funded by the City of Santa Clarita and established in February 2006, the VIDA Program or Vital Intervention and Directional Alternatives, is a 16-week program designed to assist "at-risk" youth between the ages of 12 and 17 by redirecting negative behavior into positive alternatives. In providing the program, the City of Santa Clarita and the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station recognize the importance of offering counseling, family action, community service, physical training, team building, and career guidance to wayward youth in our community. All this is done in an effort to help redirect negative behavior of our youth, who may be tempted to explore gang affiliation, drug use, or crime.

All that effort and hard work came to fruition Friday, April 25, 2008, when the City of Santa Clarita's very own VIDA Deputy, Timothy Ferrone, was named as the "VIDA Deputy of the Year" Vidadeputyyearduring the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department's annual Salute to Youth Dinner, sponsored and hosted by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Youth Foundation.  Tim's nomination came from the the Sheriff Department's Community Oriented Policing Services Bureau, who described Tim as extraordinary, outstanding, and special.

Tim is committed to VIDA on a personal level and aspires to see every youth under his care get away from negative influences, excel throughout the program and graduate into a new direction of life successes.  Tim is known for his surprise house and school visits where he keeps track of his VIDA students and ensures they are doing well, obeying their parents and generally making the right life choices and decisions.

In week one, when the program begins, many of the participants are unsure of the life structure and guidance they are embarking upon.  Many do not have a sense of what they are capable of and may have little positive direction or self esteem.  As the program nears its end, you may have seen Tim in the early hours of the morning participating with the teenagers in a 14 mile hike across the City of Santa Clarita that occurs in the 15th week of the program.  This hike is challenging, but becomes a special one for the participants as it demonstrates true accomplishment and a culmination of all their hard work and dedication.  Many of the teenage participants obtain a true sense of accomplishment and self worth after completing something they never thought they were capable of.  For most of the teenagers, it represents a true new beginning.  The hike is the last step before graduation and concludes with the honorable issuing of dog tags to the teenagers and a celebration breakfast.

"There are many success stories, but the biggest personal accomplishment for me, and the one I am most proud of, is the fact that  many graduates of the program refer their friends and family members who are experiencing similar life challenges to me, " said Deputy Ferrone.  "It is very fulfilling and demonstrates to me that I am making a difference in their lives and am on the right track."  "It is truly an honor to receive this recognition," he added.

During the presentation and announcement Friday night, Sheriff's Department representatives applauded the City of Santa Clarita for their commitment to the program.  It was the City's continued funding of the program, despite the temporary suspension of the program in other areas due to budgetary constraints, that has truly paid dividends for all those involved and the community.

"The City of Santa Clarita clearly understands how important it is to provide guidance, structure, and accountability to our youth," said Mayor Bob Kellar.  "We are committed to all our youth programs, as it is up to everyone in the community to take personal responsibility for ensuring that our children have every opportunity to succeed," he added.  "We are extremely proud of Deputy Tim Ferrone and his accomplishments with the VIDA program."  "He is a great asset to our community and Sheriff's Department!"

"It is the City of Santa Clarita's confidence in and continuance of the program that demonstrates their strong focus on the success of our youth and ensuring those youth in our community, who need extra focus and direction, are not forgotten or left behind," said Captain Anthony La Berge.

All members of the press are invited to learn more about the program, participate in segments of it or find out more about the "Vida Deputy of the Year" - Deputy Timothy Ferrone.

All members of the public who are interested in the VIDA Program can obtain information at the following link on the SCVSheriff.com website and fill out the on-line information application:  VIDA Information and Interest Application.

SCV Sheriff Volunteers to be Recognized

SCV Sheriff's Station Recognizes "National Volunteer Week" -  April 28th, through May 3rd, 2008, is National Volunteer Week.  During the week the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station will recognize and show appreciation for all the committed volunteers who devote their time throughout the year to making the Santa Clarita Valley a better, safer place to live.

In addition to our local recognition, this year Volunteer Ken Wiseman of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff Station's Search and Rescue Team, who was nominated by Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich as the 5th District representative, has been selected as the "Volunteer of the Year".  Ken was honored and recognized at the Los Angeles County Volunteer of the Year luncheon on Monday April 21, 2008, at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion.

Additionally, Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station volunteers Michelle Kampenga, Frank DiGiovanni and Dave Silberman were honored for reaching 1,000 hours of volunteer service to the residents of the Santa Clarita Valley.  They each personally received their 1,000 hour pins from Sheriff Leroy D. Baca on Thursday, April 24, 2008, in a ceremony at Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau in Monterey Park.  Michelle and Frank are both very active members of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff Station's Volunteers on Patrol Program and Dave is very active with the station's front desk and counter operations.

Other station volunteers include sheriff explorers, patrol reserves, posse members, search and rescue and station clerical staff, just to name a few. Some of the volunteers individually dedicated more than 600 hours of their own time throughout the year, many times performing the same functions as full-time paid personnel.  These volunteers tirelessly and selflessly give their time, day in and day out, all year long to help the residents of the Santa Clarita Valley.

In local recognition of these individual achievements and as a demonstration of thanks and gratitude for the more than 180 volunteers that devote so much time and effort to the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station and the community throughout the year, the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Booster Club will host a luncheon in their honor.  The annual luncheon event will be held on Saturday May 3, 2008 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Macaroni Grill - 25720 The Old Road, Stevenson Ranch.

John Price, President of the Santa Clarita Sheriff's Booster Club; Anthony La Berge, Captain of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station; Natalie Salazar, Director of the Community Law Enforcement Partnership Program; and Cathy Stapleton, Assistant Director of the Community Law Enforcement Partnership Program will attend the event and recognize the volunteers countless accomplishments.

The group of 180 volunteers to be recognized at the event this Saturday dedicated more than 36,000 hours of volunteer service and saved the County of Los Angeles and the City of Santa Clarita more than $749,000 in 2007 alone.

National Volunteer Recognition Week of April 28th through May 3rd has adopted the theme "Volunteer to Change the World" for the 2008 recognition week as an apropos way to describe the true impact of what volunteer service can accomplish.

"These volunteers deserve our recognition and appreciation every day, but this week and this event offers us the opportunity to formally express our gratitude," said Captain La Berge.  He added, "All station personnel are encouraged to take a moment and give the volunteers a BIG 'Thank You' when they see them this week!"  "What is truly remarkable is that many of the volunteers have full time jobs, or have already completed entire careers in other fields."

All credentialled members of the press are invited and encouraged to attend the event.  For additional information contact Deputy Pat Rissler at (661) 799-5159 or Sergeant Gregg Lewison at (661) 799-5158.  For volunteer opportunities visit the

Pedestrians Injured During Traffic Collision

Thursday - April 24, 2008 - 10:35 a.m. - Saugus:

A serious traffic collision occurred on Bouquet Canyon Road, north of Espuella Drive, this morning.  Preston Branch, M/19, of Palmdale was driving a 1989 Honda CRX southbound on Bouquet Canyon Road.  As he changed lanes, entering the #3 lane, he apparently pulled in front of a 2006 Saturn ION, cutting it off. The Saturn, driven by Christopher Guillermo, M/22, of Saugus, hit the back of the Honda causing it to go out of control.  The Honda went over the west curb line and struck two pedestrians, Alfonso Garcia, M/19, of Saugus and Anna Martinez, F/19, of Valencia, who were walking southbound on the sidewalk.

The pedestrians were treated at the scene by the Los Angeles County Fire Department. They were then transported to Henry Mayo Hospital where Garcia is listed in good condition and Martinez is listed in fair condition. The drivers of the two vehicles were not injured.

Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in this collision.

Public Safety Dispatchers - "The Calm During The Storm"

SCV Sheriff's Station Recognizes "National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week" -

April 13th, through April 19th, 2008 is National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week.  Public service and safety entities from all over the united states are participating in this recognition week in an effort to outwardly show appreciation for all the men and women who serve as public safety dispatchers.

This week serves as an opportune time to remind our residents in the Santa Clarita Valley of the hard working dispatchers that answer their calls for help and provide a direct link between the community and the responding deputies.

"It is the calm voices of reason and quick actions of these personnel that allow for immediate and coordinated responses to more than 57,000 calls for service in the Santa Clarita Valley every year," Said Captain Anthony La Berge.  "We are fortunate to have such highly skilled and dedicated personnel working behind the scenes for us every day in the Santa Clarita Valley," he added.

As an expression of appreciation for the consistently high level of performance and professional devotion to duty that our Sheriff's Public Response Dispatchers demonstrate every day, Captain La Berge and the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station recognized the eight dispatchers assigned to the station with a gift and words of appreciation yesterday.

In addition to our local recognition, events are occurring all week long throughout Los Angeles County and the Nation.  Yesterday, Assistant Sheriff Marvin O. Cavanaugh presented the Department's Public Response Dispatcher of the Year Award at the Sheriff's Communications Center in Los Angeles.

Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station officials also take the opportunity this week to remind all residents that the 9-1-1 emergency telephone number is to be used only for life threatening emergencies, crimes in progress, or incidents that are quickly escalating and may result in violence.

Residents are encouraged not to call 9-1-1 for such things as loud music or party complaints, traffic information, non-injury traffic collisions, general questions or report calls.  Also, immediately following a natural disaster, such as an earthquake, residents should not call the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station just to ask "What happened".  The phone lines are quickly inundated and should be reserved for those who have an immediate need for service.  Residents should also program the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff Station's main dispatch phone number, (661) 255-1121, and the Los Angeles County Fire Department's main dispatch phone number for the Santa Clarita Valley, (661) 259-2111 into their cell phones.

When calling the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station with an emergency or other incident requiring the response of deputies, the caller should be prepared to provide the following information if at all possible:

  • The nature of the problem
  • The location of the problem
  • The location and contact information of the caller reporting the problem
  • Whether or not there are weapons involved, seen or accessible
  • Business names, cross streets, and other area indicators or landmarks
  • Descriptions of persons involved including: How many, sex, race, age, height, weight, hair/eye color, clothing, other physical and clothing indicators such as - glasses, mustache, tattoos, hat, jacket, shirt, shoes, etc.
  • Description of vehicles involved including: Make, model, year, color, license plate number, body type, direction of travel, etc.

Remember, the dispatcher may cut you off in the middle of the conversation or sentence.  They may even be abrupt and concise with you initially.  This is necessary at times in order to immediately obtain information that is critical to the initial timely response.  As the dispatcher is talking to you, they are multi-tasking, communicating with other personnel, entering in the call, utilizing communications systems and immediately starting the response of personnel to your incident or emergency.  Dispatchers are trained to control the call and gather pertinent information as quickly as possible, because mere seconds can make the difference in the final outcome of the call.  It is crucial that they control the conversation and the caller.  Try to remain calm and patient with the dispatcher and be prepared to quickly and accurately provide the information they are requiring.

Interviews, dispatch/desk ride-alongs, and photo opportunities will be coordinated for credentialled members of the press upon request.  For additional information contact Sergeant Darren Harris at (661) 799-5814.  For information regarding career opportunities with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department or the position of a Public Response Dispatcher, call 1-800-233-7889, visit the following link: LASD Hiring or read this Law Enforcement Technician Job Bulletin.
