SCV Sheriffs & Fire Host Community Safety Program

Working together we can make a difference.  Get prepared before an emergency or disaster occurs -  Community Relations personnel from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department - Santa Clarita Valley Station and the Los Angeles County Fire Department will join together next week to host two Community Safety Programs for residents in the Santa Clarita Valley.

The first community program will be held in the City of Santa Clarita on Monday, May 12, 2008, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the College of the Canyons in the Aliso Hall - Room 101- 26455 Rockwell Canyon Road, Santa Clarita

The second community program will be held in Castaic, Unincorporated Los Angeles County, on Thursday, May 15, 2008, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Castaic Elementary School - 30455 Park Vista Drive, Castaic.

Emergency services personnel from both agencies will be on hand to talk about brush clearance, evacuation procedures, using the Sheriff and Fire Department Web sites, and much more.

These events will offer a unique opportunity for residents to get involved with the safety and protection of their neighborhoods, learn how to best care for their family and property in the event of an emergency, ask questions and raise concerns, and talk about how we can all work together to keep the Santa Clarita Valley one of the best places in the nation to live, work, and play.

It is always important to be aware of how to keep your family and neighborhood safe!  As we enter into the fire season, it is crucial that valuable public safety related information is disseminated to our community members before an emergency occurs.

Information about the Community Emergency Response Training (C.E.R.T.) program, which is another way residents can take their involvement to the next level, will also be available.  We hope to see you there!

Cracking Down on Buckling Up

Click it or Ticket Aims to Boost Seat Belt Use -

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Santa Clarita Valley Station will be aggressively enforcing the state's occupant protection laws as part of California's 2008 Click it or Ticket mobilization, taking place May 12th through June 1st.  The campaign relies on heavy enforcement and public education as a means to help California achieve the highest seat belt use rate in the nation.  California currently has the nation's fourth highest seat belt use rate at 94.6 percent.

"We want to make sure that all divers and passengers buckle up on every ride, day and night," said Captain Anthony La Berge of the Santa Clarita Sheriff's Station.  "Our deputies will be on the lookout for those who are not buckled up and for teens and children not riding properly restrained.  We will not accept excuses or give warnings.  It's Click it or Ticket."

California has a primary seat belt law which requires every passenger in the car, including the driver, to wear a seat belt at all times.  If stopped and found to be in violation, law enforcement will issue citations without warning,  Tickets for first seat belt violations range from $80 to $91 for adults and $330 to $401 for children under age 16, depending on the county.  Additionally, children age 12 and under are required to ride properly restrained in the back seat.

"We're doing well with nearly 95 percent buckling up, fourth highest in the nation," said Christopher J. Murphy, Director of the California Office of Traffic Safety.  "That's 1.5 million more people protected from death and injury by using seat belts since the Click it or Ticket campaign started in 2005.  But we can do better yet.  I urge everyone to always buckle up."

While the buckle up rate for adults has continued to climb in recent years, California's teen seat belt use rate lags behind the general population.  In 2007, California's teen seat belt use rate was 88.9 percent, well below the state rate of 94.6 percent for the same year.

More than 280 law enforcement agencies statewide will be participating in this year's Click it or Ticket mobilization.  Additionally, agencies are encouraged to conduct nighttime patrols in an effort to boost compliance at night.

Funding for officer overtime to support California's Click it or Ticket campaign was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Best Web Site: SCVSheriff.com

City and Sheriff's Web site, SCVSheriff.com, receives 1st Place honors - winning the "Award of Excellence" at the annual California Association of Public Information Officers (CAPIO) "Excellence in Communications 2008" conference -

Just seven months after the launch of SCVSheriff.com, the City of Santa Clarita and Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station received top honors in the Web Site category at the annual California Association of Public Information Officers (CAPIO) "Excellence in Communications 2008" Awards Ceremony.

The event was hosted by CAPIO at the Embassy Suites Hotel in South Lake Tahoe on April 17, 2008.  CAPIO announced in a press release that 149 submittals were received from agencies and cities throughout California covering dozens of public information, service, and communications categories such as Web Site, Special Publications, Special Innovation, and Public Safety Programs.

The City of Santa Clarita and the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station entered into a technology development partnership in early 2007 in a collaborative effort to design, develop, and launch a new state-of-the-art Sheriff's Station Web site - SCVSheriff.com.  The purpose of the venture was to expedite the release and flow of information to the public and better serve the needs of our technology savvy residents.

The Web site was officially launched on September 26, 2007, and has since taken off, providing us with the ability to establish and maintain direct and immediate communications with the community and helping us educate the public on crime prevention matters, understand what the community wants and expects from their Sheriff's Department, and aid us in notifying our residents of current information critical to public safety.

Since its launch, more than 40,000 people have visited the site where they were able to obtain information pertaining to the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station, submit crime tips, ask questions, and make service requests.  The Web site was also used to post critical information during the October 2007 wildfires, the Interstate 5 Freeway truck tunnel crash, and more than 150 other incidents of note in the Santa Clarita Valley through the use of the "News Room" and the "Santa Clarita Valley Alerts" sections.

Critical on-line tips from residents have also aided in solving several cases, including the identification and arrest of two persons believed to be responsible for a statewide theft related crime spree, dating back to January of 2007.

Since its launch, the Web site has expanded to include the Sheriff e-Notify and Sheriff e-Alert sections which provide an an area where community members can sign up to receive, directly from Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station, various information related to the latest news and press releases, Neighborhood Watch, SCV Alerts, the City of Santa Clarita's Sheriff's Business Alliance, youth programs, and "What's Happening" current events.

The Web site has been so successful that expansion is in the works and daily sections and updates are being added to meet the needs of our proactive and involved community.  You are currently reading this release on the SCV Sheriff's News Room which provides instant notification capabilities and direct feeds to community based news outlets.  Just another way we are staying in touch with you.

"I couldn't be more excited about the praise and recognition the Web site is receiving," said Captain Anthony La Berge of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station.  "We expanded our close partnership with the City of Santa Clarita in an commitment to enhance all levels of communication and service to our residents throughout the Santa Clarita Valley.  This award and the substantial use of the web site by our community are clear indicators that we are focusing our efforts in the right direction. It was critical that we establish additional ways to directly communicate with our residents and we will continue to explore all avenues of potential enhancements of our technology and public safety systems to supplement our traditional law enforcement services.  Service, service, service, is what we are all about," he added.

Mountain Lion Sighting - Newhall

Wednesday - April 30, 2008 - 5:00 p.m. - Newhall:

Deputies responded to a call near the 21300 block of Oakriver Lane late this afternoon where two mountain lions were spotted sitting on a hillside.  Deputies report that there were some bones, apparently belonging to small domestic animals, and bike tracks in the area, but the mountain lions did not pose any immediate danger to residents.

The California Department of Fish and Game responded and managed to chase one of the cats, a large male, further into the rural area of the hillside just before dark.  Deputies conducted door knocks in the area to warn residents of the sighting.

The California Department of Fish and Game offers the following safety tips in their "Keep Me Wild" brochure pertaining to mountain lions:

Staying Safe in Mountain Lion Country

Mountain lions are quiet, solitary and elusive, and typically avoid people.

Mountain lion attacks on humans are extremely rare. However, conflicts are increasing as California’s human population expands into mountain lion habitat.

  • Do not hike, bike, or jog alone.
  • Avoid hiking or jogging when mountain lions are most active—dawn, dusk, and at night.
  • Keep a close watch on small children.
  • Do not approach a mountain lion.
  • If you encounter a mountain lion, do not run; instead, face the animal, make noise and try to look bigger by waving your arms; throw rocks or other objects. Pick up small children.
  • If attacked, fight back.
  • If a mountain lion attacks a person,
    immediately call 911.

Residents should call the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station at (661) 255-1121 if a mountain lion is spotted nearing a populated area in the Santa Clarita Valley.  If it is poses immediate danger to any person you should promptly call 9-1-1 and be prepared to provide detailed information to the dispatcher pertaining to the location of the animal.

Additional information on living in mountain lion country and the California Department of Fish and Game's complete brochure and safety tips can be found at the following link: "Keep Me Wild" mountain lion information.

City's VIDA Deputy Honored as Best in the County

VIDA: Our Youth - Our Future - Funded by the City of Santa Clarita and established in February 2006, the VIDA Program or Vital Intervention and Directional Alternatives, is a 16-week program designed to assist "at-risk" youth between the ages of 12 and 17 by redirecting negative behavior into positive alternatives. In providing the program, the City of Santa Clarita and the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station recognize the importance of offering counseling, family action, community service, physical training, team building, and career guidance to wayward youth in our community. All this is done in an effort to help redirect negative behavior of our youth, who may be tempted to explore gang affiliation, drug use, or crime.

All that effort and hard work came to fruition Friday, April 25, 2008, when the City of Santa Clarita's very own VIDA Deputy, Timothy Ferrone, was named as the "VIDA Deputy of the Year" Vidadeputyyearduring the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department's annual Salute to Youth Dinner, sponsored and hosted by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Youth Foundation.  Tim's nomination came from the the Sheriff Department's Community Oriented Policing Services Bureau, who described Tim as extraordinary, outstanding, and special.

Tim is committed to VIDA on a personal level and aspires to see every youth under his care get away from negative influences, excel throughout the program and graduate into a new direction of life successes.  Tim is known for his surprise house and school visits where he keeps track of his VIDA students and ensures they are doing well, obeying their parents and generally making the right life choices and decisions.

In week one, when the program begins, many of the participants are unsure of the life structure and guidance they are embarking upon.  Many do not have a sense of what they are capable of and may have little positive direction or self esteem.  As the program nears its end, you may have seen Tim in the early hours of the morning participating with the teenagers in a 14 mile hike across the City of Santa Clarita that occurs in the 15th week of the program.  This hike is challenging, but becomes a special one for the participants as it demonstrates true accomplishment and a culmination of all their hard work and dedication.  Many of the teenage participants obtain a true sense of accomplishment and self worth after completing something they never thought they were capable of.  For most of the teenagers, it represents a true new beginning.  The hike is the last step before graduation and concludes with the honorable issuing of dog tags to the teenagers and a celebration breakfast.

"There are many success stories, but the biggest personal accomplishment for me, and the one I am most proud of, is the fact that  many graduates of the program refer their friends and family members who are experiencing similar life challenges to me, " said Deputy Ferrone.  "It is very fulfilling and demonstrates to me that I am making a difference in their lives and am on the right track."  "It is truly an honor to receive this recognition," he added.

During the presentation and announcement Friday night, Sheriff's Department representatives applauded the City of Santa Clarita for their commitment to the program.  It was the City's continued funding of the program, despite the temporary suspension of the program in other areas due to budgetary constraints, that has truly paid dividends for all those involved and the community.

"The City of Santa Clarita clearly understands how important it is to provide guidance, structure, and accountability to our youth," said Mayor Bob Kellar.  "We are committed to all our youth programs, as it is up to everyone in the community to take personal responsibility for ensuring that our children have every opportunity to succeed," he added.  "We are extremely proud of Deputy Tim Ferrone and his accomplishments with the VIDA program."  "He is a great asset to our community and Sheriff's Department!"

"It is the City of Santa Clarita's confidence in and continuance of the program that demonstrates their strong focus on the success of our youth and ensuring those youth in our community, who need extra focus and direction, are not forgotten or left behind," said Captain Anthony La Berge.

All members of the press are invited to learn more about the program, participate in segments of it or find out more about the "Vida Deputy of the Year" - Deputy Timothy Ferrone.

All members of the public who are interested in the VIDA Program can obtain information at the following link on the SCVSheriff.com website and fill out the on-line information application:  VIDA Information and Interest Application.
